I have returned from my wedding and honeymoon as Mrs. Call! I’m excited to see all of my students and pick up where we left off! I want to thank all of you for being understanding through this whole time from my illness during our scheduled conferences, to my absence for my wedding and honeymoon. It has meant so much to have your support! I look forward to the rest of the year with this great group of second graders!

We’ve started our study of weather and weather tools this week! We’re all excited to include science in our daily routine because it’s so interesting, fun, and hands-on. On Monday, we made wind vanes. We went outside to use them, but the wind was exceptionally still : ) We recorded this observation and planned to try again another day. Today we got to see a rain guage in action and read the measure of rainfall. We’re looking forward to experiments with temperature and more observations of the weather at school!

Thanks to all of the parents who came out on Tuesday night! I hope the dance party was a blast! It’s great to know that we’re all on the same page as we move through this school year together!

Tuesday Night

We’ve got a big night coming up on Tuesday! First, we are meeting in the classrooms with parents and kids at 5:30 to discuss Responsiveness to Instruction (RTI) and Positive Behavioral Support (PBS) at 5:30. This will basically be a forum for me to communicate to you what the expectations and procedures are for this year as well as to answer any questions you may have. At 6:00, we will have our first Roadrunners on the Run Family Wellness Night in the gym. It’s going to be a DANCE PARTY!! Woo hoo! I’m so excited! Students will receive a homework pass for attending the 5:30 classroom meeting AND for attending the dance party (potential for 2 passes for each child). I hope to see you all there! It’s going to be a great night!

Pocket Day was a Success!

We had a great time yesterday with Pocket Day! Elise McCabe took the prize for the most pockets by a long shot with an outfit her mom created just for the occasion! We all had fun estimating, tallying, skip counting, adding, and subtracting our pockets! Thanks parents for your support! It was a great afternoon!

Pocket Day!

On Thursday, September 3, we will be having Pocket Day! This fun day is a chance to wear all the pockets you can because we will be tallying, skip-counting, adding, and graphing them in math class! There will even be an award for the student with the most pockets on their outfit! I can’t wait! Hmmm, I wonder which outfit in my closet has the most pockets . . . .

Our First Week

Our first week of school is coming to a close. We’ve had a great time getting to know each other and beginning to learn our new routines and procedures. Right now, the class is having their first Art Bus class which should be lots of fun! After receiving all of the job applications, I’ve assigned classroom jobs. All of the students are excited to show their expertise and responsibility in there assigned job. I look forward to beginning our reading class routine starting next week. All in all, I think it’s been a great week!

The First Day of School

We have had a great first day of school! I appreciated getting to know each of your children a little bit more as we began to establish our routines and expectations for learning together. I will update our class blog regularly to communicate with you and give my students the opportunity to publish their work (hicksclass.wordpress.com). I want to let you know that this Friday, August 28, is the due date for all of your child’s forms sent home at open house. Also, if your child kept a summer reading log to earn a reward, it is due Friday. Finally, Mrs. Roach let me know today that she would appreciate it if we could collect the Wellness Initiative Surveys sent home in Tuesday Folders by Friday as well. Thank you for all of your support and communication as you sign your child’s planner every night and Tuesday Folder weekly to let me know we’re on the same page! Thanks for sharing your child with me. I can’t wait to learn more and more about them with each passing day!

A New Beginning

It’s time to begin a new school year! I am excited to welcome a new group of students into my classroom and begin our journey together through second grade!
